Room 18 is now on a well deserved holiday break. What a fabulous year we have had together - I will miss you all being my students; thank you for being amazing young people. This blog will remain open, so have a look through the old entries and reminisce, or post something new.
This is also the final post for this blog as a Year 5 and 6 class. I am now changing levels within the school and also classrooms, so I think it is fitting that I say thank you to all the Year 5 and 6 students that have contributed to this blog and offered their ideas and thoughts to it.
For all students of Room 18 - thank you so much.
S1 is a Year 5 and 6 class at Balmoral School in Auckland New Zealand. Join us on our learning adventures.

The Westpac Chopper!
We have had an amazing visit from the Westpac Rescue Team in their helicopter. Some students and teachers (including Andrew) were lucky enough to get a ride. It was exciting for everyone all the same. What a great service Westpac Rescue offers to our country. Remember they need support from fundraising and donations to continue their services.

Grasshopper Tennis
Everyone in Room 18 is back into the swing of things for Term 4. It's warming up and we are enjoying being able to use the school pool again.
We have also had a great time this year with Grasshopper Tennis; we have learnt a lot of new skills and also had heaps of fun.
Here are some pictures of us in action.

Chopper Challenge!
This term we have been lucky enough to have the team from Auckland Westpac Rescue Helicopters in at school as part of the fundraising effort to support this wonderful cause. Some of our students have signed up and are trying their best to achieve their goals and raise money to support rescue helicopters.
Everyone gets to take part in the Chopper Challenge though, and as you can imagine some of the tasks really are challenging!
Room 18 post your comments about the things you enjoy and find challenging.

Market Day for Charity
Room 18 made an amazing effort and were very successful in their market day learning this term. It was very inspirational to see all Hiringa students design, create and sell their products in the name of charity. The SPCA and KidsCan were very appreciative of your efforts Room 18! We raised a grand total of $444 and gave $200 to KidsCan and $244 to the SPCA.
Well done!

Cultural Dress Day 2013
It was great to see so many students dress up in their cultural costumes. It is a proud moment to wear something that represents your life. Here is a short clip of the Year 5 and 6 students strutting their way down the red carpet!

Sustainability - Beautifying areas with portable gardens?
For Rich Task this term we will be continuing with the design process we have been exploring.
This term (through the idea of legacy and what we leave behind) we are creating/designing and building a portable garden, staying true to the theme of sustainability and reusing and recycling materials. This will also require us to use scientific procedure to understand more about the order of nature and use it to assist our attempts to recreate it.
Another part of our learning this term is the gardens and we will be hoping to plant, grow and harvest produce to sell at the farmers market on September the 13th.
It is a short term, so let’s hope for perfect growing conditions.
Portable? Beautiful? Get your thinking caps on Room 18!
