The Art Gallery Project

Room 30 have been privileged this term to work with the Auckland Art Gallery and renowned New Zealand artist Judy Darragh. The project involves Room 30 working with these amazing experts to assist and help plan for a new Creative Learning Centre at the gallery for later this year.

The aim for this project is to involve the students in all phases of the process; from generating ideas, analysing potential problems and solutions, to evaluating the final designs. This is the first time that young people have been involved, so we are very privileged to be taking part in this collaborative venture.

The video below is taken from the 3 working sessions we have had. The next visit will be in May to discuss and critique the design options. What a great learning experience!

CIB Sharing

Room 30 has been learning about animals and topics that apply to animals and have done some fact finding research.

This involved identifying what we already knew or thought we knew and adding new found facts to our knowledge. To share we had a choice of video, sound recordings, slide shows, drama and posters.

We had our presentations and showed our facts in a creative way. Here is one example of a slideshow:

Zoo Trip

On February 19th, 2015, we went to the Auckland Zoo. We were able to view a range of the animals and thought about how these animals were in captivity and what had the zoo done to try to make the creatures feel like they were in an environment similar to that of its native home.

We heard that in the 1950's the zoo once kept 15 lions in a small concrete enclosure and there also used to be elephant rides all day. Another thing that used to happen was that they had trained chimpanzees that would be dressed up and pretend to be humans by drinking tea and even smoking cigarettes!!

This will now help us learn more about wild animals, animals in captivity and humans roles and responsibilities when taking animal rights into account.

When it comes to this earth we need to ask ourselves, whose home is this?

Art Gallery - Looking at art.

What a great time we had at the art gallery last week. We learnt about two ways to view art and also had some time to work in the creative space and walk around some of the gallery. We got to go into part of the light show as well.

For this task:
- What did you enjoy and why?
- What are the two ways that we learnt about looking at art? Give examples using the pictures of our trip.
