Rich Task - Our Inventions and Innovations.

Room 18 has had a busy term looking at inventions and innovations. The children were placed into groups and within these groups had to come up with a product that could be made and sold at this years Balmoral Big Day Out.

Each child had to take on a role in this collaborative technology effort and a number of considerations had to be taken into account. Such as cost, sale price and profit, the ease of creation, the design and materials, whether it suited a particular market, whether it was a need or a want, how it worked and the promotion of the product to our class. We had seven great ideas - The Pouch Pocket, The Broominator, Velcro Rope, V - Belt, Sticko-Towel, Beads and Bracelets, and even the Funky Brush.

Room 18 this task is to comment on the invention or innovation you and your group have come up with. It does not matter whether it was the one we will make as a class or not.

Tell us about your role in the group and the information you shared with the class – Cost/Profit, Need/Want, Market, What it does, How it is made and so on. If it was your job, post about it – the world should know!

Some other inventor/innovator might want to know about it…maybe you will be world famous!

VELCRO ROPE

Our group chose to promote the velcro rope. I came up with the idea of the velcro rope, Hugo thought about making a soda hat. It was a though desition, but they voted for the velcro rope.

ROLES-
Daphney: procedure, 3d design, how it is made and Materials.
Jacob: Needs and wants and market
Svetlana: Uses
Hugo: Cost, Sell price and profit.

MY ROLES-

Materials:
•3 meters of velcro-$6.00
•6 meters of bagstrap material-$4.80
•Needles-free
•Black thread-90c(100 meters)

Procedure:
1.First ready all of the materials.
2.Then insert the black thread into the needle.
3.Now you can stich the velcro(rough) at the end of the bagstrap(you only need 2 meters of it, 1 on each side). Do not stich the velcro too close to the end. Do the same on the other side.
4. Next, you may stich the velcro (soft) on the middle(3 meters). They should be 12 cm apat from the rough velcro. You have made a velcro rope!

3D DESIGN-
I couldn't show the 3d design here, but I know room 18 people have seen it. It is just a rope, but it is flat. Instead of tying a knot, you just stick together the velcro together.

STICKO-TOWEL!!!!
My group chose to do the sticko towel because it applied to a lot of people.

My roles where:
What it does and 3D design.

The other people’s jobs were...
Rayce: market.
Aidan: cost/sell price/profit and procedure.
Shania: why we should vote for it.

A part of my speech goes like this...
Are you tired of your towel always falling down after a hot shower or a good swim at the beach, couse now you don’t have to with the new STICKO-TOWEL.useing a old but well known adhesive material called Velcro.
But that’s just part of my speech

Zahra:
I like the way how you remembered to put the total in. I didn't even think about it. I liked the way you wrote your speech, but if you were to do it again, I think you might want to extend your procedure. I know it's pretty hard because the funky brush is easy to make. AWESOME!!

Jack:
I enjoyed reading some of your speech. It was well written. I don't think you have to change anything. WOW!!

Pouch Pocket
My group chose the pouch pocket as our innovation, it is easy to create, all material available and it was a relevant creation that could do some use.

ROLES:
Ashley-Procedure, prototype and design.
Robbie-Phoning and cost, sell price and profit.
Iosa-What it does.
Oscar-Materials and costing.
Anneke-Market, needs/wants, 3D design and costing.

WHAT I DID:
During the time I had left over I had to try and cover a lot of jobs like the market, needs/wants and the costing. We ended up basing our product on school students or people who need desks. WE cover the pouch pocket as a need and a want, a need because people can have a safer and more reliable place to store stationary and a want because our product isn’t necessary to have. Also I helped with the costing, when we had all the costs of the equipment we the estimated that each pouch pocket is worth around $2. That may sound like barely anything but what happened is that we added all the costs of all the equipment and divided it by 20 because that’s what we are planning to make.

Total sell price per pouch pocket: $8

Total profit for selling 20: Around $160.00

The 3D design showed what the pouch pocket would look like as well as the prototype. But now we are actually now making the pouch pocket we went to the schools sewing/cooking teacher and she has shown as a stronger and more reliable design, so now we are making a final prototype and design.

ANNEKE:
WOW Anneke! I liked what you said, it's very well written. The pouch Pocket was obviously going to be chosen. It was a tough desicion I made, but I still chose the Pouch Pocket, judging it by the presentation. Maybe the POUCH POCKET dserves to be chosen and to be shown to the world of inventions.

Well done to you for posting your ideas so far. They are well written, clear and expressive.

Daphney, you should be named 'The Blog Superstar' your comments are always thought provoking and supportive of others.

Jacob, you should write your speech into the blog. It was really funny, and showed that you understood your role in aiming your product at the intended market.

Keep it up!!

Hi! Alicia here!

My group, chose to do the velcro belt, though it was a tough decision, because we had SO many ideas to chose from.
In my group, there was me(obviously), Mele, Zach, and Yohani.

ROLES:
Alicia: Why we should vote for it, needs and wants, and procedure.

Mele:What is it, needs and wants.

Zach:Marketing, and 3d design

Yohani: Cost

We were hoping to sell the velco belt, for around about 8 dollars, but we lowered it a bit, to $7.50.
Altogether, it costed $5.30 to make, and our profit would have been $2.20 per belt, and we were hoping to sell atleast 30.

If I were to comment on how well our group was working together, I'd say we all worked EXTREMLEY hard and we all got along nad we managed to get everything done.

See yah L8r!!!

They are original stories that my husband and I have written over the years. Our compendium blog has comprehension activities and vocabulary. We would love to hear what you think!

FUNCKY BRUSH

My group choose to do the funcky brush because we couldn't
think of anything other than that to do.

My job was to do the market we think that the funcky brush is for school kids.

We couldn't choose who should do the need and the wants so I said I
would do the needs and the wants. The funcky brush would be a want because you don't realy need the funcky brush but you should still have it.

The people in my group are me [Isla], Matthew, Nicky and Zahra.
We worked well together but we had a few fights about who should do
what.

I realy loved desgining the funcky brush and i would like to do it
some other time.
