Inventions and Innovations

Kia Ora to the best class in the universe!

Welcome back to Term 3. Doesn't time go by so quickly? From the stories you have told in class, I know that you all had a well deserved holiday break and are ready to continue with your amazing learning journey.

Over the next 2 weeks you must research an inventor or innovator. Include these things:

- Name
- Date of Birth and Death (not applicable if they are alive ...)
- Details of who they are
- Details of there inventions/innovations
- Personal comment about their personal characteristics
- References of where you got your information from.

Your inventor/innovator does not need to be world famous, but must have changed something in our world for the better or even for the worse.

Example Inventor: Thomas Edison
Example Innovator: Bill Gates

Looking forward to it!

THOMAS ALVA EDISON

- Date of Birth and Death
Thomas Alva Edison (February 11, 1847 – October 18, 1931)
Was an American inventor, scientist and businessman who developed many devices that greatly influenced life around the world,
- Details of there inventions/innovations
Including the phonograph, the motion picture camera, and a long-lasting, practical electric light bulb. Dubbed "The Wizard of Menlo Park"
By a newspaper reporter, he was one of the first inventors to apply the principles of mass production and large teamwork to the process of invention, and therefore is often credited with the creation of the first industrial research laboratory.

ABOUT THOMAS ALVA EDISON'S LIFE.
1847 Born on February 11Th at Milan, Ohio.

1854 Moved to Port Huron, Mich.

1857 Set up a chemical laboratory in the cellar of his home.

1859 Became a newsboy and "candy butcher" on the trains of the Grand Trunk Railway, running between Port Huron and Detroit.

1862 Printed and published "The Weekly Herald," the first newspaper ever to be typeset and printed on a moving train. The London Times features a story on him and his paper, giving him his first exposure to international notoriety.

1862 Saved - from otherwise certain death in a train accident - the young son of J. U. Mackenzie, station agent at Mount Clemens, Mich. In gratitude, the child's father taught him telegraphy.

1862 Strung a telegraph line from the Port Huron railway station to Port Huron village and worked in the local telegraph office.

1863 Obtained his first position as a regular telegraph operator on the Grand Trunk Railway at Stratford Junction, Canada. Later, is resigned by them to help develop a duplex system of telegraphy

1863-1868 Spent nearly five years as a telegraph "tramp operator" in various cities of the Central Western states, always experimenting with ways to improve the apparatus.

1868 Entered the office of Western Union in Boston as a telegraph operator. Becomes friendly with other early electricians - especially a later associate of Alexander Graham Bell named Benjamin Franklin Breeding - who was much more knowledgeable than both himself and Bell on the state-of-the-art of telegraphy and electricity. Entered the private telegraph line business on a very modest scale. Resigned from Western Union - was about to be fired anyway - in order to conduct further experimentation on multiplexing telegraph signals.

1868 Came up with his first patented invention, an Electrical Vote Recorder. Application for this patent was signed 0n October 11, 1968. Because the invention was way ahead of its time, it was heartily denigrated by politicians... He now becomes much more oriented towards making certain there is a strong public demand and associated market for anything he tries to invent.

1869 Landed in New York City by way of a Boston steamship, poor, penniless, and in debt. While seeking work, chanced being in the operating room of the Gold & Stock Telegraph Company when their ticker apparatus broke down. No one but he was able to fix it, As a result, he was given a job as superintendent at the remarkable wage of $300 per month.

1869 Went into partnership with Franklin L. Pope as an electrical engineer. Radically improved stock tickers and patented several associated inventions, among which were the Universal Stock Ticker and the Unison Device.

Hi! Alicia here!
For this, I’ve chosen to do Galileo Galilei, who was a famous Italian inventor, physicist, mathematician, astronomer, and philosopher.
He was born on the 15th of February 1564, and died on the 8th of January 1642.
He is well known for inventing the telescope, but not only did he invent the telescope, he invented the hydrostatic balance for weighing items in the air & in water in 1586, the thermometer in 1593, a compass to help solve maths in 1597, and the one and only telescope, in 1609.

Galileo Galilei was born in Pisa, Italy, and was the oldest of 7 children.
His father was a musician, and a wool trader, who wanted his son to study medicine, as there was more money in medicine.
At the age of 11, Galileo was sent to study in a Jesuit monastery. In 1581, at the age of 17, he entered the University of Pisa to study medicine, as his father wished.
At the time Galileo entered university; a debate had started up, about heavier objects, falling faster than lighter objects. According to legend, Galileo decided to try. He needed to be able to drop the objects from a great height, so the Leaning Tower of Pisa was the perfect spot.
As he got to the top, he threw the small object and big object off at the same time. They all landed at the base of the building, at the same time. It was then proved, that Aristotle was wrong.
However, Galileo’s life was a success, and as time and generations passed by he became well known for all his wonderful inventions.

Thomas Edison
Thomas Alva Edison (February 11, 1847 – October 18, 1931) was an American inventor, scientist and businessman who developed many devices that greatly influenced life around the world, including the phonograph, the motion picture camera, and a long-lasting, practical electric light bulb.
He received patents for over 1000 inventions, most involving electric light and power, batteries, the phonograph and the telegraph. Many if not most of Edison's inventions were little more than improvements on existing ideas or technology. The key to Edison's success is embodied in perhaps his most famous quote: "Genius is one percent inspiration and 99 percent perspiration."
Thomas suffered hearing problems and did not do well in school as a result then at the age of ten his mother pulled him out of public school and began teaching him at home. Edison became interested in chemistry and set up a lab in the basement.
Edison is famous for inventing electric light, it was not an original idea. The idea of electric bulbs had been around for quite some time. He and the workers in his lab tried some 6000 different filament materials before hitting on one that would provide a reasonable life span. Edison then went on to develop a power plant system that would operate his lights.

Hi there It Anneke, I'm giving feed back to Zahra and Alica.

Zahra: I iike how you have included ALOT of information but next time maybe bring some paragraphs down to main points.

I really like how you included dates on when everything happened like a time line.

Alicia:I think you chose a really interesting man! He is amazing. I like how you used clear main points in your information, also how you introduced your inventor.

I think Galileo Galilei is a great example for a man who likes to prove things to the point.
Thanks Anneke

PERSONAL COMMENT

WOW! Leonardo da Vinci was more than just a painter and an inventor! Leonardo is a very famous and intelligent man, in fact he is a genus. He has accomplished many things and has shapped the world dramatically. He is a very famous man. I think this movie is about him: Da Vinci code. I've never watched the movie, but I've heard of it.

I personaly like all of the inventors because they helped us in even a very small way, but at least they made our life more easier. If Leonardo da Vinci was still alive, he would be very famous.

MY COMMENT

ZAHRA-
COOL! You have A LOT of information in there. I've read some. I agree with Anneke, I think you could separate some paragraphs into main points. I like the way how you did the events in his life in a "chronological" way.

ALICIA-
AWESOME! Alicia you have chosen a very COOL man. Galileo Galilei is a very interesting man. Our inventors are both Itlalian you know.

Anneke-
GOOD WORK Anneke! You know how you mentioned the phonograph, you reminded me of this game I played during the holidays: Poptropica. I traveled to the time tangled island and there was this game how you have to find the phonograph for Thomas Edison.

I liked all of the information you posted, most of your information are the same with Zahra, but I still like it.

ALL-
WICKED! Great job for remembering to post on the blog! I liked reading all of your info, but I skipped a few because I can't be bothered reading all of it, but all of them were pretty cool.

RICHARD JAMES
invented: the slinky toy.
y.O.B:N/A
Y.O.D:1974
The slinky toy was invented by a man named.Richard James, in 1943.
He was a naval engineer trying to develop a meter designed to monitor horse-power on a naval battle ship.
He was working on this one day when one of the tension springs hit the ground and his idea for a toy was born.
He worked for two years to develop this toy and it was his wife ,Betty, who named it.

VELCRO ROPE

Our group chose to promote the velcro rope. I came up with the idea of the velcro rope, Hugo thought about making a soda hat. It was a though desition, but they voted for the velcro rope.

ROLES-
Daphney: procedure, 3d design, how it is made and Materials.
Jacob: Needs and wants and market
Svetlana: Uses
Hugo: Cost, Sell price and profit.

MY ROLES-

Materials:
•3 meters of velcro-$6.00
•6 meters of bagstrap material-$4.80
•Needles-free
•Black thread-90c(100 meters)

Procedure:
1.First ready all of the materials.
2.Then insert the black thread into the needle.
3.Now you can stich the velcro(rough) at the end of the bagstrap(you only need 2 meters of it, 1 on each side). Do not stich the velcro too close to the end. Do the same on the other side.
4. Next, you may stich the velcro (soft) on the middle(3 meters). They should be 12 cm apat from the rough velcro. You have made a velcro rope!

3D DESIGN-
I couldn't show the 3d design here, but I know room 18 people have seen it. It is just a rope, but it is flat. Instead of tying a knot, you just stick together the velcro together.
