Then the rain came down...

Hi Room 18! I hope you are enjoying your holiday break where ever you are and what ever you are doing. If you were in Auckland today you would have noticed we had a pretty good rain storm and many places had flash floods - including our own school!

Trish Ramsay was working in her room when she noticed these amazing scenes and captured these great pictures.

Rich Task Term 2 - What do you think?

The World Trade Centre was more than a building to most Americans it was symbol for many other things.  Buildings sometimes hold more meaning than fuction or purpose.

This has also happened in Christchurch with many of the iconic buildings being destroyed, one of these is the Cathedral.

When rebuilding these structures and buildings what do you think that the architect takes into account?

Why do they choose certain materials?

How does nature impact upon how we change our construction of these things?

Kandinsky - Room 18 Creative Art

This term Room 18 has been studying abstract art and have produced some amazing interpretations using the artist Wassily Kandisky's abstract art as an inspiration for colour, line and form. They also used music to create their work, using music from Fiona Apple's 'Not about love' and Pink Floyd's 'Shine on you crazy diamond'.

Once all children have completed their work we will upload a slideshow of their work, but for now the children will reflect on their art experience.

Answer these questions:
What have you titled your work and why?
What have you learnt about abstract art? How is it different?
Make a comment on one of the images in the video shown below? What did you notice? What did you like? Make a comment about the colours and ideas you had in your work.
Which music inspired your piece the most and how?

Amazing Writing

In Room 18 this term we have learnt about character descriptions. We know that it is very important that our audience is able to see the story in their mind. We used an exemplar for Level 4 called 'A Kid Called John' - you can view the sample used as a model here. Not all children are publishing their work, but all stories are a great example of using explicit description of a characters physical appearance and personality traits.
